Utah Man Indicted for Bank Robberies Linked to Unique Uber Getaway

A Salt Lake County man, David Converse Harris, faces federal charges for orchestrating two bank robberies, displaying an unusual use of an Uber getaway after the first heist. This article delves into the details of the alleged crimes, the investigations that unfolded, and the charges Harris now faces.

Bank Heists and the Unusual Uber Connection:

On October 31, 2023, Harris reportedly entered Brighton Bank in South Salt Lake, Utah, handed a note to the teller, and made off with money, including a dye pack that exploded soon after his departure. What sets this case apart is Harris' use of an Uber for his getaway. The investigation unveiled that the Uber driver unwittingly transported Harris from the bank to his residence, observing red dye on his hands and jacket, and smoke emanating from a pocket. Law enforcement discovered a dye pack where the Uber picked up Harris, providing a unique trail for investigators.

A Stolen Lexus and a Second Robbery:

On November 2, 2023, authorities located Harris at a Midvale motel. Attempting to apprehend him, Harris fled in a stolen Lexus, prompting a dangerous chase that authorities eventually called off. The same day, Harris allegedly struck again, robbing a Chase Bank in Millcreek, Utah, using a similar note-passing technique.

Multi-Agency Pursuit and Arrest:

The pursuit continued on November 3, 2023, when Harris was located in a stolen Lexus in Tooele County. A multi-agency pursuit ensued across counties, culminating in a crash on the Jordan River Parkway Trail. Harris attempted to escape on foot but was ultimately apprehended by law enforcement.

Legal Ramifications:

Harris now faces two counts of bank robbery, charges that carry serious consequences. His initial court appearance is scheduled for November 13, 2023, at the Orrin G. Hatch United States District Courthouse in Salt Lake City.

Investigative Collaboration:

The FBI Salt Lake City Field Office spearheads the investigation, receiving assistance from multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Taylorsville Police Department, South Salt Lake Police Department, Adult Probation and Parole, and Salt Lake City Police Department.

Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN):

This case aligns with Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a comprehensive program aimed at curbing violent crime and gun violence. PSN emphasizes community collaboration, trust-building, targeted enforcement, and measurable outcomes to enhance neighborhood safety.

David Converse Harris's alleged bank robberies, coupled with his distinctive use of an Uber getaway, highlight the evolving nature of criminal activities. As legal proceedings unfold, the case serves as a testament to the collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative in tackling violent crime and ensuring public safety.
